Coins of this design were the first issued by the Roman Republic after 211 BCE. This issue introduced a new weight standard that would be the standard for Roman denarii until the 3rd century CE. The front design depicts the goddess Roma, while the reverse depicts Castor and Pollux, the patron deities of Roman cavalry and equites, on horseback. Scholars assign this coin type to the category Crawford 44/5. (Private Collection)
