The present Essay is an attempt to illustrate Mr. Freeman s History of Federal Government by evidence deduced from the Coinage of the times and countries therein treated of. The purely historical application of Numismatics is a point of such importance, that the author, conscious of the shortcomings of this general view of the subject, will be amply satisfied if it prove the means of stimulating some abler researches in the same direction. Note. All references in the following Essay to the text, or to a page with no particular work specified, are to Mr. Freeman s History of Federal Government. I have also followed as closely as I could the system of proper-name orthography adopted in his work.
