St. Augustine saw the clash of pagan and Christian culture as a challenge to his cultural identity. The present study proofs that St. Augustine, even as a Christian bishop, covered both of these educational worlds competently and that his cultural point of view varied depending on his recipient. A turning away from the traditional literary system or even a adverseness of education, as frequently maintained, cannot be detected.
