Intrigued by Books 12-14 of Ovid's Metamorphoses , which sees the author revisit Vurgil's epic world of Aenean, Sophia Papaioannou sets about exporing `the ingenuity of the rationale behind Ovid's idiosyncratic summary of the Aeneid in it, and seeks to show how this first Aeneid `both validates and emulates the sophistication of the prototype'. How and why Ovid does this forms the subject of this study.
