helga Bumke's specialised and heavily annotated thesis examines the forms, subject and symbolism of early Greek statuary groups. Arranged chronologically, sections focus bronze and marble statuary from the Geometric, Archaic and early Classical periods in turn. In addition to groups featuring animals, the emphasis is on mythological and divine figures which have been found in, for example, Samos, Didyma, Delphi, and the Athenian Acropolis and Agora. The study traces trends in the composition, iconography and symbolism of the statues, many of which are illustrated, as well as the significance of their archaeological context. German text.
