If you want to discover the captivating history of the Crusades, then keep reading...

It could be said that European kings and nobles in the Middle Ages were Crusade mad. The enormous amount of fighting men who periodically sailed off to the Near East to do battle with Muslims are evidence of the widespread popularity of overseas adventurism at the time. The notion of a Crusade, in which large armies assembled from various regions of Europe for the purpose of doing battle with Turkish and Arab Muslims, became so fixed that it was expanded to include Crusades against heretical European Christian sects.

In The Crusades: A Captivating Guide to the Military Expeditions During the Middle Ages That Departed from Europe with the Goal to Free Jerusalem and Aid Christianity in the Holy Land, you will discover topics such as
  • The First Crusade (1095–1099) –The Pope Calls the Faithful to Arms
  • The Armies of the First Crusade Engage with the Enemy
  • The Aftermath of the First Crusade
  • The Second Crusade (1147–1149) The Beginnings of the Kingdom of Jerusalem
  • The Third Crusade (1189–1192) – The King’s Crusade
  • The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) – The Latin Empire of Constantinople and the Children’s Crusade
  • The Fifth Crusade (1217–1221)
  • The Sixth Crusade (1228) – The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II Takes the Cross
  • The Seventh Crusade (1248–1254)
  • The Eighth Crusade (1270)
  • And much, much more!

I almost couldn't put the book down, it describes all the Crusades so excitingly. I really appreciate that you listed them all, so if anyone is interested in more, they can just look up the particular Crusade.

For me, the book gave me a lot of new knowledge: I got to know the real political reasons behind the Crusades, I gained insight into the cruelties of Catholicism at that time, and I feel that I understand today's political and religious events better than before.

I read some parts with astonishment that such massacres could have taken place in the Middle Ages. I was completely captivated by the way the book leads the reader from story to story.

As always Captivating History gets to the nuts and bolts of the subject at hand without all the fluff to fill pages with unnecessary reads. The information is plentiful and well researched.

This is a great explanation of the development of quasi-states after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire and why they fought constantly in the Early Middle Ages.  Being defeated by a more powerful foe did not automatically mean destruction; rather, the defeated kept his rent-producing farmers and lands and just sent tribute to the winner.  He also had to promise to aide his new lord with military service when so ordered.

The Crusades offered knights and nobles a way to tap into the riches of areas that were not in the European feudal system.  I had no idea the Crusades took place over 3 centuries!  The author took the time to show how the successes and failures happened in each of the Crusades.  It would have been helpful to have had a map (or two) showing the major areas discussed:  Antioch, Acre, Aleppo, Damascus, Jerusalem, etc.  It would also have been helpful to have had a map of Europe, showing how the Crusaders traveled to Jerusalem.

I've read several books and eBooks about the Crusades, but this product is the most clear and concise explanation so far.

This is a compact chronology of the many crusades. To me this is a guide for more studies i.e.the dark ages, the roman republic and empire, actually the entire middle ages.Pull on any thread and there is so much more to know. As always the captivating history books are concise and thorough. I agree with the other reviewer and will re-read with a map nearby.
