This is a collection of stories and essays of mill village life in the 1950s and 60s when cotton mills were scattered across the south. This book focuses on the Erwin cotton mill in Cooleemee, North Carolina, situated on the banks of the Yadkin River. Community life, small town values, and traditions come to life through the telling of stories and shared memories of those who were children and teenagers during that time period. Our hope is that this book will take you back to a time when life was good but times could also be hard. Almost everything centered around the mill. They owned the company store and hosted events throughout the year for employees and their families. The river and the mill-owned recreation center were our playgrounds. We roamed the streets of our little village without fear. We were raised by members of the community and we loved it. The people of the village took care of each other, helping out when a family was in need, sharing the hard times and the good ones. It was a great place to grow up.
