On August 24th, 79 A.D., a violent eruption of Vesuvius buried it under a mass of ashes and lapilli; it was not destroyed, but only buried. Pompeii’s tragic end marks the beginning of the story of our time. Stabiae and Herculaneum were also destroyed at the same time. Many of the people of Pompeii managed to escape, while many others died of suffocation, buried in their houses or in the streets.
