Preface THE editor of a, monthly periodical once desired a short article on theS even Wonders of the Ancient World. To write it seemed an easy task, for long wanderings in theO rient had led me to the sites of several of these ancient marvels, yet when I attempted to name them, I could not. Dismayed at my ignorance, I asked my learned friends to name them; they succeeded no better.
