From the Preface: Beyond the brief biographical sketch of Don Kagan and he listing of his publications, there are sixteen original essays, all of them commissioned and written for this volume by former students of his, graduate or undergraduate, either at Cornell or at Yale. Ten of them deal either with Thucydides or with some aspect of the conflict which Thucydides immortalized, the great Peloponnesian War between Athens and its Empire and Sparta and its Peloponnesian League allies in the late fifth century. ...The remaining six essays deal with later topics in history, four from fourth century Greece and one from the Roman Empire.
