RUNNER is a Native fourteen-year-old girl living on the shores of Clearlake, California in 1847. She loves to run wild and would rather hunt like a man than stay in the village doing mundane women's work. On a hunting foray she is captured by Mexican slave traders and sent to Mira Valles Hacienda in Nayarit, Mexico. The saga of her trials and the horrors of slavery underscore her strength and desire to survive. Though her body is denigrated in every way, her spirit cannot be destroyed. Ultimately she risks her life to escape and return to California.
