Assyria to Iberia: at the Dawn of the Classical Age Hardcover – September 30, 2014

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

A sweeping survey of objects from one of the richest artistic periods in history

This comprehensive book explores the spectacular art of the first millennium B.C. from the Near East to Western Europe. This was the world of Odysseus, in which trade proliferated with Phoenician merchants; of King Midas, whose tomb was adorned with treasures; and of the Bible, whose stories are illuminated by recent artistic and archeological discoveries. It was also a time of rich cultural exchange across the Mediterranean and Near East as diverse populations interacted through trade, travel, and migration.

Assyria to Iberia showcases masterpieces that reflect the cultural encounters of this era. Stunning details convey the beauty and significance of more than 300 objects drawn from collections around the globe. These objects include carved reliefs from the majestic palaces of ancient Assyria, Phoenician fine bronze metalwork and carved ivories, and luxurious jewelry. Texts by over 80 international scholars provide a compelling picture of this fascinating period, one that is essential to understanding the origins of Western culture and art.

A relaxed armchair ride through a thousand years or so of middle eastern and mediterranean art and culture. The photos are a knockout. The supporting information is scholarly, accessible to this lay reader and offers years of reading ahead via the links to further information if I want to dig a bit deeper. Not many coffee table books press my buttons like this one does. A triumph of a publication that reminds us that little black marks and images on paper can still have enormous power in our hi-tech info age. The editors have done a great job of giving the dozens of authors a consistent voice.

This is a catalog of an excellent exhibit which was well curated. The book contains more information about each artifact shown in the exhibit. The illustrations are described succinctly but carefully. The book appeals to both the scholar and the lay person. Objects from different countries are juxtaposed so the reader can see the networks across the Mediterranean. The history of the period is well illustrated, and no fakes are in the collection shown.

Went to NYC to see this fabulous exhibit, it stretched over about 3 acres and I couldn't take it all in. This book is an invaluable and beautifully-presented overview of the Met's once-in-a-lifetime display of the jewelry, temples, and irreplaceable artifacts of the heart of the ancient western world, corresponding to what Arab nationalists now want to re-assemble as their caliphate. One can appreciate their attachment to the area with this book.

Bought this for a class. Thought I would re sell after the class was finished, but I want to keep it! Has so much information on the art of the ancient near east, you won't be upset if you're interested in this period. Fine, high quality publication with brilliant color reproductions, and it is BIG!

Wonderful Exhibit! We saw this exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and it was one of the best I have seen ever. There were wonderful artifacts from museums around the world - some very, very special. There was a good description of the history. Photographs were not allowed, so this book will provide a wonderful memory as well as more in depth information.
