Following the excitement caused by the gold coffins it contained, the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun was virtually ignored. This book finally provides a detailed analysis of the construction of the sarcophagus and its decoration almost 70 years after its discovery, focusing on previously unrecognized evidence that the box was altered in antiquity, probably to adapt it for Tutankhamun. Possible previous owners are reviewed, and translations and commentaries on the inscriptions are included. The book is illustrated by Harry Burton's photographs taken during the clearance of the tomb.
