Alexander the Great in His World 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
The book begins with an exploration of the Macedonia that conditioned the lives of its inhabitants. It also traces such influences on Alexander’s life as his royal Argead ancestry, his father, Philip II, and his mother, Olympias. The author examines Alexander’s engagement with Greek culture, especially his relationship with Aristotle, and contemplates how other societal factors – especially the highly militarized Macedonian kingdom and the nature of Macedonia’s relationship with neighboring states – contributed to his achievement.
What was the significance of these influences on the man who succeeded in conquering most of the known world from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River? The author focuses on this question in exploring ancient landscapes and resurrecting key figures from antiquity in order to penetrate the motivation, goals, and inner being of Alexander the Great.

To approach this Thomas evaluates the following factors; His Macedonian Identity, The values of the Argead Kingship, Macedonian relations with Greece, Macedonian relations and knowledge of Persia and the importance of the army. This approach is noteworthy as too often a historian may be tempted to write a book just focused on one of these rather than each factors relationship with the other. In some areas Thomas sticks to convention looking at the kingship as a Hellenistic Military Monarchy - but in other areas some interesting ground is covered - the physical geography of Macedonia is well discussed as well as a good discussion of the Argead line a subject that is genuinely under discussed in academia. Though perhaps the ultimnate success of the book is in its ability to recognise Alexander's debts (to Philip, Archelaos, Olympias, Aristotle) and still recognise that what he himself achieved was still both great and showing genius. Too often recent works have sought to downplay Alexander's greatness and explain it away by giving credit elsewhere.
This work is well worth serious consideration by both those in serious study and also those with a strong interest in Alexander, Hellenistic or Macedonian history. That the work is written by a confessed non-Alexander specialist makes the work highly refreshing and insightful.
